What is in my fieldwork bag?

Field season can feel like a whirlwind, long days outside in grueling weather can take a toll on a person. So being prepared for anything is essential. Let's go over the basics of what you should pack for fieldwork.

1. Backpack
I do not skimp on a field bag, you will be wearing it all day long and often carrying heavy gear. A bad bag (not necessarily an inexpensive bag) will hurt your back after a long day. Choose a bag that has hip clips, ample storage storage space, good support to keep the load off your shoulders.
2. Field Gear
Every field technician has a different set of gear they need to carry, however, it is ESSENTIAL to check that gear in the morning before you leave your home or hotel. Make a checklist for yourself and double check it each morning. And, bring extra pencils.
3. Water
If you are going to remember anything, remember your water. I bring at least 3 liters of water with my always. On warm days, I always carry a Gatorade. Want to win brownie points with your coworkers? Keep a cooler in your field truck with ice cold water and Gatorade. Chances are your company's per diem policy will pay for that and it will keep your team rockin' all day.
4. Food
I like to pack both a lunch, and keep a surplus of snacks in my bag. Carrying food on your person instead of leaving it in the field truck will allow you to stay energetic and alert all day long.
5. Headlamps and Batteries
You never know when you will get stuck out in the dark, this is why even on "short days", I carry a headlamp & a backup set of batteries. In addition, I bring a power bank and charging cords for my phone and data tablet. Things happen, you may have forgotten to charge your tablet, or it could get really cold in the field and your battery may drain faster than expected. Who knows, be prepared!
6. Safety
Safety Policies are in place for a reason, this is why I always make a note of the nearest hospitals and closest major roads in my field book in case of emergency. Always have an exit plan.
In addition, I carry a simple first aid kit that can cover an array of things from cuts and scrapes, plant irritation, bug bites, or sprained ankles.
7. Extra Layers
You have probably heard the saying, "You can't take off what you didn't bring"... well it is true for field work. I always carry a few extra layers either on my person or in the field truck. Depending on the season this includes: extra boots, warmth layers, rain jackets, beanie and sun hats, and sunglasses.
Packing a standard field bag is going to keep you happy and healthy throughout the field season. Happy field season! What do you pack in your bag that I did not list here? Let me know.
